Notes on Nixos After a Week

Motivation

I migrated my Home-Lab-Server from Ubuntu LTS to NixOS about a week ago. The Journey was and still is quite interesting. I very much like the idea behind NixOS. Declerative system wide configuration management, atomic updates, rollbacks, reproducability, just getting the config to another machine and getting the exact same system…? Sounds like a Dream come true to me, especially in regards to servers. Thankfully, the transition went relatively smoothly. Altough in general the state of NixOS’s documentation leaves much to be desired - especially if you’re used to Arch - the installation docs were actually pretty good. So after two or three hours and me fighting the container-data dirs permissions that got messed up in the process, the Server was up and running again, so far so good.

Survivorship Bias - Look for what You can't see

Survivorship-Bias describes a statistical error where datasets are not representative of a problem due to omission of data that didn’t make it through the dataset selection process.

Here is an example: During WW2 a British engineer was ordered to engineer better aircraft reinforcements because too many of their fighters didn’t return from their missions. He was instructed to find out in which areas the aircraft where hit the most, so that he could reinforce the proper areas. He came up with this pattern of damage:

Thoughts about the Book

Great Book, great Characters, espacially Sand dan Glokta, Logan Ninefingers (The Bloody-Nine), Maljinn, West and even Jezal Luthar. The Northern Gang around Threetrees is also great, espacially Dogman and Black Dow. Joe Abercrombie writes characters really great. He has you rooting for “bad” Characters like Glokta and he has this great humor - kind of like Andrzej Sapkowski - where the arrogance and cluelesness of characters like Luthar is a mockery of theirselfs without being explicit about it.

Thoughts about the Book

Great Book
Great Genre Mix, every Story was worth reading about
Good SciFy but also many more genres, as it is a good Genre mix
The Priests Story was told very well, sparking interest and had a killing conclusion
The Poet’s Story was Funny and intreguing until the End, very well written, had real character
The Colonel’s Story was very mysterious and intreaging but didnt need the Sex Scenes, was kinda weird but maybe it’s what he was going for
Lamia’s Story was Cyperpunk-esque and good
The Scholar’s Story was great and tragic and makes you root for him the most
The Council’s Story didn’t exactly hold up to the others for me but his own Tale was great
The Templar never told his Story, maybe in The Fall of Hyperion
very much to be curious about: The All-Thing, AIs, the Shreik, the cult of the Shreik, the Time Toombs, the Templars and their Tree Ships, it’s a Universe with great potential

Good volume. The subplot about the gruffs was funny, and the plot as a whole was pretty good. The Island is pretty intense and mysterious, and Nicodemus is just an intriguing antagonist. Sanya is a cool guy, and his commentaries are peak entertainment. Also, the Archive and Kincaid are always compelling when they appear, and the bond between Harry and Ivy is kind of heartwarming.

Pretty mid. Did not have a bade time with this one but neither was it especially good. The case was weak. Getting to now more about Elaine was kinda interesting and at the end, when Harry learns Thomas has his own Hairsylist’s Saloon, that was actually hilarious.

Another good volume. Particularly the finale with the trial and the conversation with McCoy were extremely entertaining. Makes one hungry for more. Let’s see what Jim will make out of it. This Book feels like the build-up before something big is going to happen. Many loose ends are tied up here. The coin, the Black Coucil, Merlin, Murphy, Mab, Lilly, Billy, the fear of facing Michael, the keeping of the sword… All of that stuff found a place in here, it is crazy. The horror-convention plot in the middle was not my jam at all though. If the Monster-of-the-week plot had been better, this could easily have been an 8+/10 book.

Good volume. The mythos behind Kemmler is extremely interesting and the whole necromancy affair is generally thrilling. Mouse is awesome.

It was very funny how Butters thought Harry and Thomas were a couple and Thomas just went with it to embarass Harry.

I thought the whole time that Butters was going to become the Knight and get the sword because of the whole “being-a-coward” subplot but it seems that was a red herring.

Mixed Bag. The beginning was weak, then became stronger over time. Very interesting were the parts about Harry’s mother that were revealed.

Unknown Halfbrother etc is of course not exactly “original” but something like that was obviously goning to happen and im just glad it is not the typipcal “Teacher Figure turns out to be the Father” Story trope.

Good Volume. All three Knights of the cross are really cool, espacially the asian one. Nicodemus as a longterm antagonist is a great fit. The “Talk” with Molly was hilarious.

This book is awesome. All killer, no filler. First half is really good but the second half and the vampire court… just awesome! Also, Michael is a really cool character addition. Usually, I don’t like overly religious/fanatic characters, but Micheal is such a great character addition. Just the idea for a “Knight of the Cross” and the blade made out of one of the nails is so compelling. Also, the synergy between Harry and Michael and their banter is just peak entertainment. Jim Butcher does a great job at giving you just enough info to be very intrigued by all of the background story, such as with Lea and Ferrovax.

Was just fine but nothing really special. Actually kind of dragging through the last third. Not to bad but not really good. Luckily, the Characters are good enough to keep me going. I hope the next Books gets better again.

Fun read. Got through it in like 2 sessions. Nothing spectecular but also nothing bad about it. The ending and who was the murderer in the detective-/crimestory was pretty predictable though. Still, good fun.

Premise: An ordinary guy finds a time traveling portal in a local diner leading to the same place in the 1950s. He gets it in his head to try to change the future and prevent the assasination on JFK, but he still has to live there for another 7 years or so until it happens. An insane amount of stuff happens along the way and he has to face the consequences of his choices.

So this one is a mixed bag. Some of the stuff in there is quite good, but much of its content really was not for me. He is basically looking back at his life and telling a story about how he did not feel that it had a story until he actively tried to change it. And there are here and there a few words of wisdom and some thoughts worth exploring on your own but for me there was too much bloat. Also, I am a convinced atheist and he is often going on about what I consider to be esoteric Christian blabbering.

Thoughts about the Books

This Series of Books to me is something really special. Sapkowski builds a great realistically feeling world where there is no good and evil, only different shades of grey. There is so much in these Books, so much social commentary without pointing fingers, the subtle kind of humor, the egoism of the characters, the philosophical concepts and there has never bin a cast of better main and secondary characters. Also some of the Prose is just beautyful. The Mantras and in-world Bookpages and leaflets add so much to his world. The Dialog is some of the best I have ever read.
